Ensure your pets have a safe space this holiday season

Tis the season for holiday gatherings and all the excitement, adventure, noises and smells that often accompany our visiting family and friends. It’s important to remember, while some pets may be overjoyed with everything, for many it can be overwhelming and stressful.

If your pet is one that doesn't delight in the bustle of holiday get-togethers, one way you can help is by ensuring they have a safe space where they can relax and get away when they need to. Even those who seem completely comfortable may appreciate a retreat on occasion.

Here are a few tips for creating a safe space for your pets:

The space should be in a room they are already comfortable or familiar with.
If they have a favorite bed, toy, blanket, etc, that's where it should be. If their favorite place is in a room you know is going to have a lot of holiday activity, consider establishing a secondary safe space somewhere you know will be quieter.

The room should be accessible to them whenever they need.
If it's on the other side of a baby gate or behind a closed door, they don't actually have the choice to go there when they need to. Any obstacles or restrictions should be removed.

The room should be safe.
Make sure doors and windows are secured. Consider the flooring and any obstacles in your pet's way. They should have a clear path on good traction surfaces (slick flooring can be daunting especially for pets with mobility issues). If they are going to chew up the holiday decor, put it out of reach or leave it somewhere else.

Most pets would choose a quiet location but some might prefer some soothing music/tv.
Know your pet's preference and have it ready before everyone arrives.

Let your guests know the rules of the safe space and where it is.
If your pet retreats to their space, let them go and leave them alone. This includes other animals who may have been brought to visit. It might not be just people or noises your pet is trying to take a break from.
